CEBU CITY — The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has seized some Php 72.7 million worth of shabu and arrested 918 pushers and users in a total of 634 operations in the first 10 months of this year.
Supt. Romeo Santander, the City Intelligence Branch chief of the CCPO, said this was at least 50 percent higher than the total volume of illegal drugs seized in the city last year.
Santander attributed this to the activation of the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC)).
”I give credit to our barangay captains for their undying support,” Santander said.
He also cited the consistent prodding of Police Regional Office 7 Director Prudencio Tom Bañas as another reason they leveled up their campaign against illegal drugs, especially shabu, this year.
Santander said the biggest drug haul was recorded in July, a month after the start of the school year.
“We were expecting the supply and demand for illegal drugs to increase in that month because it’s the opening of classes. They’re targeting mostly students,” Santander said.
Last July, the city police arrested 129 drug suspects, 23 of whom were suspected pushers while 106 were alleged junkies.
They also seized packs of shabu worth PHP21,892,540 in 84 operations conducted in the city within that period.
Santander said the second biggest haul was recorded last October, when at least PHP15,162,056 worth of shabu packs were confiscated from 80 suspects arrested in 66 operations. PNA
