URDANETA CITY — A no non-sense barangay captain of Urdaneta could easily become the role model of his peers in Pangasinan in the campaign against illegal drugs when he arrested two illegal drug traders on Nov. 1 and 2.
Barangay Captain Arsenio Lapena Elegado Sr. of Mabanogbog here arrested in two successive days Cesar Boado, 22, a resident of barangay Mabanogbog while in the act of selling one sachet of shabu to an unidentified buyer; and one Noel Maramba, 20, also of barangay Mabanogbog, on Nov. 2 and seized from him one sachet of shabu.
The two suspects were turned over to the Urdaneta City police station and were subsequently charged with violation of Republic Act 9165 or Illegal Possession of Dangerous Drugs.
Supt. Jeff Fanged, chief of the Urdaneta City police, said this was the third time Elegado arrested illegal drug pushers in his barangay.
“He is exercising his right of citizen’s arrest against criminals ans at the same time his mandate as an elected public official”, said Fanged.
He disclosed that all the barangay officials in the 34 villages of Urdaneta City are actively cooperating as members of the Barangay Anti- Drug Abuse Council (BADAC).
Aside from Elegado, the barangay officials of Camantiles, Anonas, Bayaoas and Nancayasan also, during the past months, arrested illegal drug traders in their respective barangays.
“We are giving certificates of recognition and commendation for the barangay officials for their accomplishments in arresting illegal drug pushers in their barangays”, said Fanged.
Elegado and the rest of the barangay officials of Mabanogbog will be awarded with certificates of recognition and commendation on November 9 during the flag raising ceremony in front of the city hall.
“We want to encourage everyone to participate in our fight against illegal drugs in our city”, said Fanged. HILDA AUSTRIA/PNA
