MANILA — Baguio City swimmer Maenard Roman Batnag bagged two more gold medals on Thursday, winning the boys’ 12-under 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley in the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Finals at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City.
Batnag, a Grade 6 student at the Step Learning Academy clocked 1:06.76 to win the 100-meter butterfly event and later collected his fifth gold medal with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:31.08.
Batnag, 11, also dominated the 200-meter backstroke (2:31.26), 200-meter butterfly (2:30.07) and 100-meter backstroke (1:08.88).
Sharing the limelight with Batnag was Janelle Alisa Lin of Balon, Dagupan City.
The 11-year-old Lin captured four golds in the girls’ 12-under category, including a record-breaking performance in the 50-meter freestyle in 29.46 seconds. She set a national record of 31.20 seconds in the Speedo National Long Course tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on July 19.
Lin, a Grade 6 student at the Genesis School, also topped the 200-meter individual medley (2:35.87). Her two other gold medals came from the 200-meter backstroke and 200-meter freestyle while she also won a silver in the 200-meter butterfly.
Christian Paul Anor of Balanga, Davao Oriental, a grade 11 student at Baculin National High School, won the 50-meter backstroke (29.46), 200-meter backstroke (2:20.50), 100-meter freestyle (55.77) and 100-meter backstroke (1:03.20) in the boys 13-17 years old category. He also won a silver in the 200-meter freestyle (2:04.55).
Davao City’s Adrien Matthieu Tao also brought home four gold medals and two silvers in the boys 12-under category. He won the 50-meter freestyle (28.32), 200-meter 4×50-m relay (2:00.30), 100-meter freestyle (1:01.98) and 200-meter freestyle (2:19.84) and finished second in the 100-meter backstroke (1:11.87) and 200-meter backstroke (2:34.24).
