SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Former La Union provincial board member Henry Bacurnay Jr, the current Undersecretary for External Affairs at the Office of Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, filed Tuesday morning his certificate of candidacy (COC) for the gubernatorial race in La Union for the upcoming 2016 elections.
Bacurnay, along with wife incumbent 2nd District board member Nancy Bacurnay, and hundreds of their supporters marched for about ten kilometers from Bauang town to the provincial office of the Commission on Elections (Comerlec) here.
Bacurnay is running independent because the Liberal Party (LP), of which he is the provincial chairman, has dropped him as party officer. LP has adopted Abono party-list Representative Fra
ncisco Emmanuel Ortega III as their official candidate for Governor who is also running independent.
Bacurnay said he is running to probably break the chain of the gubernatorial position which has been occupied by the Ortega clan since 1988.
“My motivation completely lies in trusting our people to go (vote) for me to end the political dynasty in La Union. It (candidacy) is my way of saying that the small can stand up againstbgi and mighty,” Bacurnay said.(Jun Elias/William Garcia)
