ALTAS DETHRONE GENERALS IN NCAA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

MANILA — University of Perpetual Help System Delta (UPHSD) Altas on Tuesday dethroned defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals in the 91st season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s volleyball finals in San Juan Arena.

Leading the Altas’ charge were team captain Bonjomar Castel and Finals MVP Rey Taneo Jr. who had 18 points apiece. The Altas prevailed in the thrilling 5 sets, 25-22, 23-25, 29-27, 23-25, and 17-15 to take home the championship trophy.

UPHSD held on and never gave up despite the 6-point lead of EAC during the nerve-wracking fifth set with Warren Catipay ending the match with a service ace.

The Generals tried their best by extending the match to the deciding set but errors plagued them to eventually relinquish the title.

EAC was led by Season MVP Howard Mojica who had 19 points.

Coach Sammy Acaylar was awarded as Coach of the Year after winning the championship. PNA/northboundasia.com
