5 Cops Wounded In Communist Rebels Ambush of Abra Police Director’s Convoy

La Trinidad, Benguet —The Cordillera police are hunting down alleged guerrillas of the New Peoples’ Army who ambushed Sr.Supt. Alexander Tagum, Abra Police Provincial Director and his convoy on their way to Malibcong town to inspect the police station which was raided Sunday by the rebels .

Sr. Inspector Grace Marron, Abra Police spokesperson, said that five policemen from the Provincial Public Safety Company were seriously injured, She identified them as PO2 Jessie Trinidad, PO1 Marlon dela Paz, PO1 Gerome Baldos, PO1 Kennon Sanggoy and PO1 Von Harold Layao, who were rushed to the Abra provincial hospital in Bangued, the province’s capital, for bullet wounds.

The cops and provincial director Tagum, in separate vehicles, were heading towards sitio Aguibo, Poblacion, Malibcong when an improvised explosive device went off, followed by automatic gunfire. Tagum was not hurt in the attack.

In the raid last Sunday of the Malibcong police station. the rebels carried off seven M-16 assault rifles, three pistols,and four mobile phones It was not known whether policeman manning the station fought back although no one of them was hurt.

The attacks were the latest staged by the communists in the Cordillera after they burned downed two trucks of the Philex Mining Corporation in Itogon town on the third week of February. Thom Picana/Northbound Philippines News
