SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union- The city government here led by Mayor Pablo C. Ortega presented awards to four living centenarians by giving them cash gifts of P100,000 each during the Christmas program of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association, Inc., at Max Restaurant, last Wednesday here.
The four oldest residents of this city are: Masa Sobreno, 110, born on August 8, 1905 of Barangay Baraoas; Elena Valdez, 110, born on July 17, 1905 of Barangay, Pao Norte; Maria Ducusin, 102, born on July 13, 1913 of Barangay, Tanqui; and Elena Martinez, 100, born on August 14, 1915 in Barangay Biday.
Sobreno walked by herself when she received her gift check from Ortega, while the three other centenarians were on wheelchairs.
“It is very rare to see some of our residents still living in their old age,” Ortega said.
Evelyn Sublino, 43, Sobreno’s caretaker and granddaughter, told media persons that her grandmother was hard- headed at times, but, she said, she and her siblings loved her very much.
Also present during the presentation of the cash gifts were Natividad Pelaez, chairperson of the federation, Sally Matoza, city social welfare officer, and Erlinda Casuga, federation vice-chair.
All federation members were treated to sumptuous meals and given gifts during the affair.
