AGOO, La Union – Police authorities here disclosed that La Union second district Representative Eufranio Eriguel was the real target of the bomb explosion that hit his back-up vehicle while on his way to a campaign sortie in Barangay Sta. Barbara here Saturday morning.
A source said the bomb, which was planted in a parked motorcycle, was detonated through a remote control device, but the suspect was a few seconds late in igniting the switch and missed Eriguel’s van.
Eriguel’s car suffered minor damages at the back but the back-up vehicle was severely damaged by the explosive and injured SPO2 Jack Baguan, Eriguel’s police escort, Samuel Ofiaza and Anthony Casem, the aides, and Jovanne Cacayuran, the driver.
Agoo Mayor Sandra Eriguel along with her daughter Stephanie visited the victims at the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center in San Fernando City, where they were taken after the bombing incident . She said that Cacayuran is still in critical condition while the three others are now in stable state and recuperating.
A police officer said the bomb used in the attack was the same kind of explosive being used by terrorists in Mindanao. It totally destroyed the motorcycle where it was mounted.
Superintendent Artemio Infante, La Union police’s information officer, said the incident occurred at Verceles Street, barely 50 meters away from the residence of Eriguel, where a parked blue motorcycle allegedly mounted with an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded.

Eriguel, who is supporting the presidential bid of Jejomar Binay, did not seek his third and final term as representative and instead his wife Sandra is running for the congressional post while his daughter Stephanie is a candidate for mayor in Agoo. Jun Elias/northboundasia.com
