CAMP PRESIDENT QUIRINO, Ilocos Sur – – Two persons were killed while 29 others were injured when a northbound Partas bus collided head-on with another passenger bus along the national highway in Barangay Bulbulala, Santiago, Ilocos Sur last Friday evening.
Chief Inspector Greg Guerrero, spokesman of the Ilocos Sur police provincial office, identified the victims as Reynaldo Pineda, 49, a calamay vendor of Barangay Bicbical, Santiago town; and Senior Fire Officer 1 Jenny Rose Cadaoas, a member of the Bureau of Fire Protection station in Vigan City. They were passengers of the Partas bus.
Police said the Partas bus was en route to Laoag City with 38 passengers and driven by Joy Jobert Brioso, 39, of Barangay Ressurrecion, San Juan, Ilocos Sur, while the southbound RedVal bus was driven by Sonny Gagutan Galano, 39, of Barangay Paratong, Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur.
The accident occurred at 8:30 p.m. when the right front wheel of the Partas bus allegedly blew up, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and smashed into the southbound RedVal bus.
The victims were rushed to the Candon General Hospital and St. Martin De Porr hospital in Candon City. Pineda was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while Cadaoas died while undergoing treatment.
As of press time, Guerrero said that 22 passengers of both vehicles, who suffered minor injuries, were already released from the hospital, while seven others were still under medical care.
