2 dead, 16 injured in southern Negros road mishap

BACOLOD CITY — Two persons died while 16 other were injured in a road accident Wednesday afternoon at Barangay Sikatuna in Isabela town, Negros Occidental, police said.

The fatalities were identified as Jenny Marcillo, 42, and Junrie Anito, 12, residents of La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

Chief Inspector Anthony Grande, chief of Isabela Municipal Police Station, said Thursday the group belong to the River of God church.

About 40 of them were on their way to a retreat in Barangay Payao, Binalbagan town on board a sugarcane truck.

At around 1:00 p.m., the truck, driven by Arnold Gazon, 31, of Barangay Carabalan Himamaylan City, had a mechanical trouble and fell on its side.

Grande said the victims were brought to a hospital, but Marcillo was declared dead on arrival. Hours later, Anito also died.

Four victims who had serious injuries were transferred to a hospital in the city.

Meanwhile, Gazon is now in police custody. PNA / northboundasia.com
