SAN JUAN, La Union – Thirteen local tourists were arrested by operatives of the regional office of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for pot session during surfing breaks along the beaches in the seaside village of Urbiztondo here at about 11:00 PM lastSaturday.
PDEA spokesman Bismark Bengwayan said that his agency acted on a tip provided by one of the establishment owners in this village that some young people were involved in the use of illegal drugs while having fun party sessions.
This town is a surfing capital, a favorite of surfers and beach goers. Surfing breaks refer to an obstruction such as a coral reef or rock tha causes a wave to break forming a “barreling wave” that can be surfed by a rider using a surfboard.
Bengwayan identified the suspects as Mark Fajardo, Amiel John Amoroso, Daryl Asong, Andy Lou Bueno, Angie Laranang Abacco, Joma Sison, Leomar Liddaway, Daryl Insulia, and Prince Israel Ambrosio, aged 19-24. The other four suspects were minors whose names were withheld.
Seized from them are 3 self-sealing transparent plastic sachets, one unsealed plastic sachet containing dried marijuana leaves, 4 sticks of marijuana, all weighing approximately 30 grams, including several drug paraphernalia.
Speaking in Ilokano, village chair Ericson Valdriz, confirmed that these arrested were not residents in this town, “all beach goers from nearby provinces.”
