ZAMBOANGA CITY– Thirteen families have evacuated to safer grounds after a landslide occurred on Tuesday night in their community in Sitio Corote, Barangay Malagutay.
Malagutay is an upland barangay located seven kilometers west of City Hall.
Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, city disaster risk reduction and management office (CDRRMO) chief, said the 13 families decided to vacate their homes for fear of their safety although no one among the houses in the area was destroyed by the landslide.
The landslide occurred as the soil softened due to continues rainshowers the past few days brought about by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) affecting Mindanao.
Apolinario said that 12 of the 13 families have sought refuge with their families while the remaining one opted to stay at the barangay hall of Malagutay.
He said the city government is providing emergency assistance to the 13 evacuee-families.
The CDRRMO has alerted the public as this city continues to experience rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms due to an ITCZ affecting Mindanao.
The heavy rains has increased water the level at the Pasonanca diversion dam to 75.44 meters, over one meter more than the normal level of 74.20 meters, swelling rivers and flooding streets downtown. PNA/northboundasia.com
