More than 1,000 Japanese hospitalized due to extreme heat in 1 week

TOKYO — A total of 1,086 people have been hospitalized in Japan since May 29 as a result of extremely hot weather in the country, the Japanese fire department controlling the emergency service said Tuesday.

Among those who had suffered from the high temperatures, exceeding 86°F in almost all the country’s regions, 17 people needed extensive treatment for at least three weeks.

About 50 percent of those affected are older than 65 years.
