La Union’s P450-M bypass road to start construction

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Department of Public Works and Highways has started the construction of a P450 million bypass road stretching from Barangay Payocpoc in Bauang town in the south to Ili Norte in San Juan in the north.

Engineer Emil Ganaden, head of the DPWH 1st La Union engineering district, said the project involved the construction of a bridge in Bauang with an initial amount of P-300 million allotted at the portion of the 2nd District of La Union.

“The primary purpose of the project is to ease traffic congestion from Bauang to San Fernando City and up to San Juan, vice-versa. It will also shorten the time of travel in these areas,” Ganaden said.

He did not say how long is the shortened travel time, from the south to north directions, but the bypass road is at least 22 kilometers long and four-lane wide, or at least 23.5 meters in width.

He said that for the part of the 1st District, an initial amount of P150 million was earmarked for the construction of a bridge along the creek in Ili Norte and four kilometers road opening.

He said the project is expected to be finished in 2022 and it will benefit the whole Ilocos region because those travelers passing from San Juan to Bauang, vice-versa, will not experience anymore the rigid traffic in San Fernando and Bauang.

DPWH also allotted funds for families who will be displaced in areas traversed by the bypass road.

Aside from the bypass road, which is an alternate to the Manila North Road, there is also a proposal for the extension of the Tarlac-Pangasinan, La Union Expressway. Jun Elias/NPN-northboundasia.com
