Manila Tourist Drowns in La Union Disso-or Cliff Diving Spot

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union – A tourist from Manila drowned after diving at the  Disso-or Cliff Diving Spot  in Barangay Amontoc, San Gabriel town Saturday noon.
Chief Inspector Silverio Ordinado Jr, La Union police information officer, identified the victim as Jose Moses Sy Ascano, 23, a resident of Malate, Manila.
Investigation showed that the victim and his unidentified companions, presumably from Manila, were on a trekking adventure in the area around the Disso-or (Ilokano for waterfalls) when he allegedly jumped from the 20-foot cliff which is being used as diving area for local and foreign tourists, but was swept away by strong water current. It was not known whether Ascano was wearing a swimming gear when he jumped off.
Disso-or, which empties into the Baroro River in the seaside town of Bacnotan, is located in the highlands of San Gabriel to the east. To get to the diving spot near the Tangadan Falls, you either hire a tricycle from San Juan, the surfing capital, and get off at a certain point of the road and trek towards the place for at least 30 minutes.
It took hours for rescuers from San Gabriel and San Juan fire stations and municipal disaster management personnel to discover and retrieve the body of Ascon. He was rushed to the Bacnotan District Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
The victim’s body was fetched by his relatives and companions who brought it to Manila.
