Laoag poultry raisers told : Stay vigilant vs bird flu

LAOAG CITY, Aug. 12 — The Provincial Veterinary Office in Ilocos Norte is urging all poultry raisers and other stakeholders here to stay vigilant against the entry of avian influenza (AI).

Provincial Veterinary Officer Loida Valenzuela said memos are being prepared by the provincial government addressed to mayors, quarantine guards, shippers, farm owners, backyard raisers and other stakeholders to implement preventive and quarantine measures immediately.

Valenzuela’s public announcement came after Secretary Manuel Piñol of the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed the presence of avian flu in San Luis, Pampanga.

“It is advised to all stakeholders to implement strict bio-security to prevent possible incursion of the disease into Ilocos Norte,” said Valenzuela as she underscored AI is considered both as an economic disease as well as a disease of public health importance.

As of this posting, shippers entering Ilocos Norte shall expect a more rigid inspection particularly those coming from the south.

Pampanga province on Friday already declared a state of calamity as hundreds of thousands of chickens in San Luis, Pampanga had been stricken with the avian flu. About 500,000 birds will be culled, including free range and strays to prevent the spread of the disease, said in a report. PNA-northboundasia
