Typhoon “Gorio,” Heavy Rains Force Evacuation of La Union Residents

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Heavy rains and strong winds spawned by typhoon “Gorio” have forced the evacuation of families in four municipalities in the province including this city.

Personnel of the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) reported that about 111 families composed of 488 persons in San Fernando City and the coastal towns of Bacnotan, Balaoan, Bauang, and Aringay were given shelter in higher grounds.

In San Fernando City, PDRRMC reported that 50 families living along the coastline were evacuated at San Agustin Elementary School, Barangay San Agustin. Two houses were partially damaged in Barangay Bungro when the  riprap or retaining abutment of a road under construction gave way, with no report of casualties.

According to some of the evacuees strong winds accompanied by heavy rains lashed like a tornado in the early morning hours of Sunday and destroyed some houses in their village.

Meanwhile, 163 persons at Barangay Pandan and 36 persons at Barangay Quirino, all in Bacnotan were evacuated including 40 persons at Barangay Paraoir, Balaoan; 9 persons at Paringao Elementary School in Bauang; and 20 persons at Barangay Alaska, Aringay. Erwin Beleo/NPN-northboundasia.com
