2 injured as truck falls into ravine in Benguet

BAGUIO CITY – A delivery truck loaded with freshly harvested vegetables fell in an eight-meter ravine around 2:00 p.m. on Friday in Atok Benguet, the town police chief said.

In a text message on Friday evening, Chief Inspector Ambot Sawatang, police chief of Atok town, said the KIA-FB delivery truck driven by Dalfo Gilberg Ramirez, 26, farmer from Sab-itan Alapang, Buguias Benguet was traversing the curved portion of the barangay road in Sitio Cattubong, Barangay Calasipan several meters from where the vegetables were harvested when the driver lost control due to the slippery road and fell into the ravine.

The truck had just took off to deliver the vegetables to the trading post in La Trinidad, Benguet.

The police said the continuous heavy rains in Benguet on Friday have made the roads slippery in the area.

Ramirez and his helper, Michael Pedro Bernal, 22, student from Quirino Hill, Baguio City, were immediately rushed to Atok District Hospital for treatment by Gonzalo Egme and Manuel Codeo, both residents of the place. Bernal was later transferred to Benguet General Hospital (BeGH) for operation.

Sawatang is reminding drivers to take extra caution when travelling in the area particularly with the thick fog and rains being experienced in Benguet.

Since Tuesday (July 25), Benguet province and the rest of the Cordillera region have been experiencing continuous heavy monsoon rains enhanced by typhoon “Gorio.” Dionisio Dennis Jr./PNA-northboundasia.com
