Surigao Sur radioman critical after shooting

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — A community radio commentator in Marihatag town, Surigao del Sur, is in critical condition after he was shot several times by still unknown assailants on his way home from his broadcast station Wednesday evening (July 26).

Julito “Paka-paka” Orillaneda, 35, owner-operator of DXJB FM, was about to disembark from a tricycle he was riding when the gunman approached him and shot him several times, police said.

Orillaneda sustained gunshot wounds on his head, neck, face and right arm, police said.

The gunman and his companion drove off on a Rusi motorcycle to unknown directions, witnesses said.

Orillaneda was rushed to the nearby Marihatag District Hospital, but later referred to Butuan City for further treatment because of the gravity of his condition, said Judith Suarez, a colleague of the Orillaneda.

Suarez, station manager of Sure FM in Tandag City, said that based on the accounts of fellow journalists in the area, said Orillaneda remained conscious even with the multiple gunshot wounds he sustained.

Colleagues in the local broadcast community described Orillaneda as a “hard-hitting radio commentator” and staunch critic of Marihatag Mayor Raul Cubil.

Orillaneda was the sixth radio commentator attacked by gunmen in Surigao del Sur since 2009 which were related to their hosting of public affairs commentary program. The four other broadcasters were killed in the line of duty.

Among the victims were Godofredo Linao Jr. who was killed in Barobo town in July 27, 2009, Datu Roy Quijada Gallego in October 14, 2011 in Lianga town, Michael Milo in December 8, 2013 in Tandag City and Apolonio Suan , a provincial board member who hosted a radio program over Real FM in Bislig who was shot on board his van in July 14, 2016 and Joe Climaco, host of a local TV program hooked to radio stations who was killed in August 25, 2016.

So far, only one suspect, Joel Namoc, who is allegedly behind the killing of Linao, was arrested by operatives of Crminal Investigation Detection Group in August 18, 2015. Chris Panganiban/PNA-northboundasia.com
