SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Echoing an earlier memorandum issued by Education Secretary Leonor Briones, the Department of Education (DepEd) in Ilocos has reiterated that no field trips will be allowed in public and private schools during the school-year 2017-2018.
Darius Nieto, information officer of the DepEd Region 1, said that the order ” was a decision reached in consultation with regional directors in a meeting with Secretary Briones ” as per Memorandum No. 47, series 2017.
He added, “The memorandum formalizes the moratorium on educational field trips and other similar activities following the tragic bus accident in Tanay, Rizal involving college students last February.”
The moratorium seeks to review existing policies and to harmonize the implementing details of regions to cover alignment of field trips to learning outcomes, safety, responsibility and accountabilities not only of schools but also of parents and of other concerned government agencies.
As the primary institution mandated to ensure access to quality basic education, it is imperative for the Department to look after the security and safety of learners in its education-related activities, according to Nieto.
He also stressed that field trips are not mandatory and that schools are ordered to refrain from conducting activities that may affect the academic standing of students who are unable to join.
“The moratorium is in effect until such time that a new policy on field trips has been issued,” Nieto said. Miriam P. Aquino/PIA1
