July 15 is special holiday in Cordillera

BAGUIO CITY — In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Cordillera as a region, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea has issued Proclamation 247, declaring July 15 as a special (non-working) day region wide.

The Proclamation said “it is just fitting and proper that the people of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.”

CAR is composed of the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province including independent city, Baguio and Kalinga component city Tabuk.

Various activities will highlight the momentous occasion which marks the creation of the Cordillera Administrative Region by virtue of Executive Order 220 of then President Corazon Aquino. The CAR-Administrative region is mandated to administer the affairs of the government in the region, accelerate the economic and social growth and development of the unit of the region and prepare for the establishment of the Autonomous Region of the Cordillera.

Cordillera is one of the two regions in the country which creation is embodied in the Constitution, specifically Article X, Section 15 of the 1987 Constitution which “mandates the creation of two autonomous regions in Muslim Mindanao and the Cordillera.

The region’s quest for autonomy is presently at a heightened mode with the filing of House Bill 5343 or “An Act establishing the Autonomous Region of the Cordilleras.” Liza Agoot/ PNA-northboundasia.com
