285 drug surrenderers in Baguio finish self rehab modules

BAGUIO CITY — A total of 285 drug surrenderers have completed and graduated in the self-rehabilitation modules prepared by the city government, Mayor Mauricio Domogan said on Friday.

Domogan said there are 36 who recently graduated, bringing the total graduates to 285 from the time the city government started helping the drug surrenderers in 2016.

He said the last batch graduated on the last week of June in ceremonies facilitated by the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (OCSWADO), religious groups and members of the private sector who all joined the city in helping reform the drug users and pushers who surrendered at the height of the Oplan Double Barrel implementation.

Domogan said the graduates underwent 12 modules of community-based drug rehabilitation aside from the battery of drug tests which were unannounced to determine their truthfulness to their rehabilitation.

The mayor expressed his gratitude to the religious and private sectors for continuing to use their talent and personal resources to ensure that the drug surrenderers will be given an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves.

Domogan said that during the graduation, he pointed out to the surrenderers that drug use can easily manifest physically, enabling drug enforcers to see.

He also related how the surrenderers took an oath during their graduation that they would quit and overcome drug addiction for good to have a better life, which he said, he hopes the graduates will abide by.

Domogan earlier also mentioned that the city conducted mandatory drug testing to all the officials and city government employees and four were found positive for drug use.

He said one of the four has died. The person was battling cancer and used marijuana for medication. The three other employees also underwent self-rehabilitation.

“The results were presented to me and I am happy to note that the results were negative. And they will retain their employment in the city government,” Domogan said.

Baguio City Police Office Director Senior Superintendent Ramil Saculles has also earlier reported that there were 2,362 drug surrenderers in Baguio.

Of the number, 1,779 were found to be drug users.

He also reported that there were an additional 92 who voluntarily surrendered from March 6 to June 30, 2017 and 53 of them are drug users. Pamela Mariz Geminiano/PNA-northboundasia.com
