PNP helps regulate muffler use

LAOAG CITY —The Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office is helping the Land Transportation Office in its intensified drive against motorcycle owners using modified mufflers.

In Laoag City and its neighboring towns, Police Senior Superintendent Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported that about 50 percent of loud motorcycles had been regulated.

To totally get rid of it, the PNP is seeking for a higher penalty for violators through the passage of an ordinance that prohibits changing of motorcycle muffler or anything that can increase noise or fumes.

Republic Act 8749 or the so-called Philippine Clean Air Act seeks to regulate and control emissions of unwanted sound of a known source passed into the atmosphere.

Under the national policy, a violator could be fined PHP15,000 for using a modified muffler.

Aside from the national law, law enforcers are also guided by a municipal ordinance, which penalizes motorcycle drivers who are using modified mufflers ranging from PHP1,000 to PHP5,000. LGA/PNA-northboundasia.com
