Flag at half mast in Pangasinan capitol to honor fallen Marines soldier

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, June 14 — The flag in front of the provincial capitol here was raised at half-mast in honor of Private First Class Eddie Cardona Jr. of the Philippine Marines who died June 9 along with 12 other Marines in Marawi City and whose remains were brought home to Bolinao town from Camp Bonifacio Wednesday night.

The flag at half mast was ordered by Governor Amado Espino III shortly after learning that PFC Cardona, 28, still single and one of the heroes in the battle in Marawi City, is now back to his home in Bolinao.

Cardona was at the head of a team from the Philippine Marines conducting clearing operations in Marawi City when he was hit by a sniper’s fire from the Maute terrorists at the back and died.

His remains arrived in Bolinao Wednesday night and loaded to a barge towards Santiago Island and then brought to his home village where his grieving relatives gave him an emotional welcome.

The date of his interment at the Bolinao municipal cemetery is yet to be set, said Ronel Cardona, brother of the deceased.

The municipal council of Bolinao passed a resolution condoling with his family and proclaiming him as hero for bringing pride and honor to his town by bravely fighting the enemy for the sake of the country and its people. Leonardo Micua/PNA-northboundasia.com
