MGB-CAR reminds miners to be safe during rainy season

BAGUIO CITY – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau – Cordillera Administrative Region (MGB-CAR) is urging small scale miners to be always updated with the weather condition for their safety.

During the Kapihan sa Baguio on Thursday morning, Engr. Felizardo Gacad, MGB-CAR Mine Safety Environment and Social Development Divison head, reminded miners to take heed of the warnings issued by the country’s weather bureau and the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), which are aired by the media or posted on social media platform.

“This will guide them in deciding whether they will enter their mine sites or not,” he said.

He also urged miners to check on the drainage systems in their mine sites when there is no rain, to make sure that they are not clogged and will not cause problems when there is continuous rain.

The province of Benguet, Gacad said, has about 10,000 small scale miners spread in different municipalities. Benguet is known for its high grade quality of gold and copper.

The region had been experiencing rains the whole of summer.

With the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declaring the onset of the rainy season, landslides are expected to occur in various parts of the region due to the mountainous terrain of the Cordillera.

Gacad also talked about the ongoing Mine Occupational Safety Training Seminar, which is participated by miners, mine owners and other stakeholders.

MGB-CAR has completed geohazard maps that can be used by local government units in disaster safety preparations. These maps are available at the office of MGB-CAR or online. LTA/ PNA-northboundasia.com
