‘Mentor me’ program trains Ilocos Region’s small entrepreneurs

BAUANG, La Union – About 200 owners of micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) in the Ilocos Region will undergo a 3-month
mentoring training under the “Go Negosyo: Kapatid Mentor Me (KMM) program” of the Department of Trade and Industry.

The training program which is in partnership with the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship started on Monday at the Marand resort here.

“The participants will get lectures towards hi-level scale for their enterprise to become globally competitive. This is to propel local business owners into innovative and competitive business environment,” said DTI’s Assistant Secretary Blesilda Lantayona during the launching program.

Lantayona said that PCE lecturers will share their ideas by coaching, incorporating innovation in products, services, operation processes, business models, and other aspects of entrepreneurship for aspiring and current entrepreneurs in the region.

“Small business owners will learn strategies on marketing, financial, human resource and operation management, among others, during the 11-week module-based sessions,” Lantayona said.

Some of the local entrepreneurs and owners of businesses in La Union that attended the program were Xavier Mercado of Halo-halo de Iloko, Gemma Victoria of Gem’s Empanada de Iloko, formerly Victoria’s Empanada; and Agustina Quitoriano of “Pagabelan ni Tinay.”

The three MSMEs shared their success stories during the launching program to inspire fellow entrepreneurs in seeking more business development opportunities.

Aside from Lantayona, also present during the activity were local officials led by Gov. Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III, Bauang Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin De Guzman, DTI regional director Florante Leal, Mylene Abiva of PCE, and DTI-La Union Provincial Director Daria Mingaracal.

La Union is the first province in the region to launch the said program that made a successful pilot run last March 8, in Samar. Over 89 areas from 16 regions in the country will also conduct the same activity within the year.

The KMM program is in line with the Duterte administration’s agenda of advancing MSMEs in the country. This capacity-building program rings together experts and industry leaders to provide free mentoring sessions to MSMEs to be conducted by PCE-accredited mentors.

Other provinces in the region are scheduled to have the same activity; Pangasinan in June, Ilocos Sur in July and Ilocos Norte in October. JUN ELIAS/NPN-northboundasia.com
