Baguio City –- Mayor Mauricio Domogan reiterated the city government’s stand for the implementation of the National Building Code the provisions for parking when constructing buildings.
He said this early Wednesday evening as he expressed support in the order of the City Building and Architect’s Office (CBAO)
Withdrawing the occupancy permit issued to building owners who failed to comply with the order to revert the parking spaces in their building plan.
The CBAO earlier ordered the closure of 11 buildings after it was found that the parking areas reflected in their plans and specification were converted to commercial spaces. the CBAO identified the building owners that illegally converted their parking allocations to commercial spaces and issued them the appropriate notices of violation and reversion of the spaces to their original use per prescribed rules and regulations mandating them to maintain parking spaces for their tenants.
The mayor said that once revoked, the business and licensing office will also have to cancel the business permits of the establishments.
The National Building Code requires buildings to provide a parking space for their tenants to prevent use of public roads for parking.
For years, the lack of parking within buildings has caused a snag on the traffic situation in Baguio. This problem does not only affect the tourists who visit the city, but gravely, the city residents who have to contend themselves with commuting for an hour or so from residence to work.
Domogan said “we are not happy to close business establishments but they have to comply with certain laws”.
According to him, designated parking allocations in city structures should remain as such for parking of clients of business in establishments within buildings to avoid contributing to traffic especially in the central business district area.
He, however, expressed confidence that the building owners will comply with the agreements and laws to prevent the eventual stoppage of their operations. LIZA AGOOT/PNA – northboundasia.com
