House panel OKs bill declaring INC Foundation day as special non-working holiday

MANILA — A House of Representatives’ panel has approved four bills seeking to declare July 27 of every year as a special national non-working holiday in commemoration of the founding anniversary of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in the country.

According to a statement on Thursday, the House committee on revision of laws chaired by Pangasinan Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas approved House Bills 196, 2607, 4720 and 5122 and the motion to consolidate the four proposals.

The bills seek to amend Section 3 of Republic Act 9645, otherwise known as the “Commemoration of the Founding Anniversary of the Iglesia ni Cristo Act,” so that July 27 of every year shall hereby be declared as a special national non-working holiday.

At present, July 27 of every year is a special national working holiday in commemoration of the INC founding anniversary.

The declaration is in recognition of the significant contribution of the INC and its members to nation-building, national identity, culture, values and development, according to the authors of the bills.

HB 196 was authored by Marikina City Rep. Romero Quimbo, Manila Rep. John Marvin Nieto, and Pampanga Rep. Carmelo Lazatin II; HB 2607 was authored by Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, Parañaque City Rep. Gus Tambunting, and Zamboanga del Sur Rep. Divina Yu; HB 4720 was authored by Quezon City Rep. Winnie Castelo; and HB 5122 was authored by Primicias Agabas.
