LAOAG CITY —- A retired policeman and chief security aide of Solsona town mayor Alex Calucag was gunned down around 8:08 p.m. on Tuesday while driving his Red Toyota vehicle along the national highway in San Marcos village, San Nicolas town.
Police Senior Inspector Joseph dela Cruz identified the victim as Warlito Maruquin, 61, a retired policeman and resident of Barangay Bagbag, Solsona, Ilocos Norte.
Initial police report said Maruquin along with another retired police companion identified as Abdon Laureta, 56, resident of Barangay 18, Laoag City, were heading the south direction when armed motorcycle-riding suspects followed and shot them several times using different firearms.
Maruquin, who suffered multiple gun shot wounds all over his body and head, died on the spot while Laureta was wounded. The latter was brought to a nearby Black Nazarene hospital in San Nicolas town and is now under stable condition.
Police authorities led by Police Senior Inspector Christian Felix and SOCO team recovered at least one unit cal. 45 Auto Pistol without serial number, one unit cal. 45 Auto Armscor Pistol with serial number 820482, one unit Cal. 45 Auto Armscor Pistol with serial number 904232, six pieces magazine assembly for cal. 45 pistol, 48 pieces cal. 45 auto cartridge cases, eight pieces heat sealed transparent plastic sachet containing alleged “shabu residues” together with seven pieces cal. 45 auto fired cartridge cases, nine pieces cal. 5.56mm fired cartridge cases and one piece deformed jacketed fired bullet.
At press time, investigators have yet to identify the motive of the killing while the suspects are subject for manhunt operation.
