Miss Universe preliminary judges revealed

MANILA — The Department of Tourism (DOT) has revealed the names of six-member panel who will be judging the preliminary competition of Miss Universe on Thursday night.

The judges are former UNICEF ambassador, author, model, actress and former Miss Universe Puerto Rico contestant Dayanara Torres; former model, actress and founder of modeling agency The Bailey Agency, Cynthia Bailey; and former journalist, publicist and international marketing director, Rob Goldstone.

Also judging in the preliminary competition are President/Executive Producer of the People’s Choice Awards, Fred Nelson; social entrepreneur, women’s empowerment activist Francine LeFrak; and Japanese actress, dancer, model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2007, Riyo Mori.

Asked what she is looking for in the next Miss Universe winner, Torres said that she expects the victor to possess more than just beauty.

“I understand it’s a beauty pageant however beauty will not be the only factor. Personality and confidence will blow the judges away every time!” Torres said.

“I’m looking forward to finding a woman who can handle herself with grace and confidence through her journey with this prestigious title,” she added.

Bailey, meanwhile said that she wanted the next Miss Universe to be a “full package.”

“I am looking for the full package. Someone who embodies confidence, intelligence, personality, style and grace. And of course beauty; inner beauty as well as other beauty,” Bailey said.

Meanwhile, Goldstone stressed the importance of the next winner having a special “X-factor”.

“The new Miss Universe should be someone who uses this incredible platform for the good of humanity. She will not just look confidently beautiful, but have that special X-factor — and I think I’ve already seen a few,” Goldstone said.

Nelson said that the next winner should possess the ABCs namely accomplished, beautiful and charismatic.

“I look for that extra spark, the unique quality which demonstrates her ability to be both the global representative of the organization and a passionate advocate for her causes,” Nelson said.

Riyo Mori meanwhile said that the next Miss Universe should be beautiful inside and out.

“She must want to use her voice and platform to give voice to the voiceless. She must be a role model for women and girls and believe she can make a strong impact on the world,” the former beauty queen said.

The Miss Universe preliminary pageant will take place in the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Thursday night (Jan. 26).

Meanwhile, the final pageant and coronation night will happen at the same venue on Monday (Jan. 30), 8:00 a.m. (Manila time).

This will be the third time the Philippines will host the prestigious pageant. The Philippines hosted the pageant in 1974 and 1994. Azer Parrocha/PNA-northboundasia.com
