DAGUPAN CITY — Some 2,000 more informal settlers are set to be resettled to safer areas here, according to Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.
Of the number, some 1,000 are living along danger zones like river banks and seashore which are prone to storm surge and flood, and 1,000 are dwellers of esteros that drain into various rivers, she added.
It is a puzzle why this big number of informal settlers moved to Dagupan when it is only 49 square kilometers in land area.
Dagupan is the Center of trade and commerce as well as education and health care all over Pangasinan.
She said these are aside from 350 to 400 informal settlers near the banks of rivers who are set to be relocated on a city government lot in Barangay Bonuan Boquig soon.
These were screened by the Department of Social Services and Development (DSWD) as qualified for relocation.
“We are just backfilling the site before building low cost houses for the relocates,” Fernandez said.
She added that it is the policy of the city government not to relocate without a sure area where the informal settlers will be transferred.
The relocation of the informal settlers is part of the strategies of the city to clear all Dagupan rivers and make them more sustainable. PNA-northboundasia.com
