TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte — Nueva Ecija’s Genisis Marana captured two gold medals in cycling’s critirium event even as Zamboanga glittered with nine golds in Day One of the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Finals in Barangay Mankilam here.
The 15-year-old Marana topped the girls 14-15 category in 14:34 at the New Tagum City Hall. Davao City’s Myra Regina Acedo was second in 14:39 followed by Cebu City’s Karen Mamayon in 14:39.
Marana’s second gold came from the 16-17 category when she clocked 23:30. Olongapo City’s Veronica Deldio (23:32) and Karen Manayon (23:32).
In the boys 14-15 category, Jose Emmanuel of Lipa City, Batangas ruled the 8-kilometer, two loop-event with a time of 13 minutes and one second. Bryan Cantamayor of Davao City placed second in 13:02 followed by Jacob Godwin Taylor of Malaybalay, Bukidnon in 13:02.
Tomas Mojares gave Lipa City its second gold medal when he won 16-17 category in 36:54. Davao City’s Richard Handomon (36:54) and Orlando Sabijon (36:38) finished second and third, respectively.
In the girls 10-13 category, Cebu’s Francis Erediano Moira claimed the gold in 11:40. Bukidnon’s Ma. Alexie Guiburan clocked 13:01 to take the silver while Cebu’s Jeana Mariel Canete (13:01) settled for the bronze.
Over at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC), Zamboanga City bets won nine golds in pencak silat.
In the baseball competition at the Energy Park, Zamboanga defeated Marasugan, Compostela Valley, 8-1, while Tupi, South Cotabato defeated Northern Samar, 6-3. Jean Malanum/PNA-northboundasia.com
