Sen. De Lima hopes Dayan’s admission puts an end to allegations against her

MANILA — Despite Ronnie Dayan’s claim that she was an alleged drug protector, Senator Leila de Lima on Wednesday expressed hope that her former driver, bodyguard and alleged bagman’s admission would give her a chance to put an end to the allegations against her.

“…Even as they portrayed Ronnie Dayan as the missing link to their drug conspiracies, his arrest and so-called admissions yesterday (Tuesday) present an opportunity for me to put this issue to a close,” De Lima said.

Dayan on Tuesday admitted receiving money in exchange for protection from suspected drug lord and son of slain Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, Kerwin, back in 2014.

He, however, denied meeting any of the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) high-profile inmates who testified that he was the alleged bagman of De Lima when she was then Justice secretary.

De Lima said that Dayan, like other witnesses who claimed that she was involved in the illegal drug trade, has been forced to turn into another one of her accusers.

She said that she would welcome this admission as an opportunity to clear her name and defend herself in court since she was “always prepared” to prove her innocence.

The neophyte senator, meanwhile, expressed hope that authorities “act within the bounds of the law, without abusing their powers and using force and intimidation on purported witnesses.”

To recall, De Lima previously admitted having had an affair with Dayan before he resigned as her driver-bodyguard but stressed that this was not proof of her culpability in the illegal drug trade.

The former Justice secretary previously said that she refused to believe that Dayan himself was involved in illegal drug trade and was using her.

It was President Rodrigo R. Duterte who first exposed De Lima as having an illicit affair with Dayan. Azer Parrocha/PNA – northboundasia.com
