DAGUPAN CITY — At least 39 drug surrenderers from Barangay Tebeng here are now making a living by making attractive lanterns which they are now selling to malls and even to the city government.
Mayor Belen Fernandez assured the surrenderers that she will personally look for commercial establishments that will buy their products for them to earn during the coming Yuletide season.
In fact, at least 400 of finished products turned in by the surrenderers were bought by the city government to adorn the side streets and to be hanged in lamp posts in various thoroughfares in the city.
Some others were bought by malls and residential establishments in Dagupan.
Fernandez said the surrenderers were trained by craftsmen of the city government how to make decorative lanterns which they can sell to earn money for their respective families.
With their income from lanterns, they have some money to be spent by their respective families this Christmas.
The training of the surrenderers was part of the program “Unang Hakbang” initiated by Tebeng Barangay Chairwoman Helen Fermil in coordination with the Dagupan City Police Station.
Barangay Tebeng was among the first five barangays in the city declared as drug-free by the Dagupan City Police Station which earlier implemented “Double Barrel” and “Oplan Tokhang” in the village. PNA – northboundasia.com
