Probers eye 2 angles in Pangasinan newsman’s slay attempt

DAGUPAN CITY — The Pangasinan police said investigators are eyeing on two angles as possible motives in the attempt on the life of Virgilio Maganes, a radio commentator and a columnist of a local newspaper here, in the early morning of Nov. 8 near Zone 1 in Villasis, this province.

Supt. Jackie Candelario, deputy police provincial director for operation, said one angle being followed up by investigators in the attempt on the life of Maganes is that the incident could have stemmed from his work, having been critical to certain people before, during and after the election.

Candelario, speaking in Thursday’s Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) forum, said the other angle is personal and the police are now securing the affidavit of a supposed vital witness in order to pin down the possible suspects.

The investigation on the attempt on the life of the newsman is being pursued by the Special Investigation Task Group Maganes created by Acting Police Provincial Director Ronald Oliver Lee, a few hours after the attempt.

At least PHP50,000 reward was pledged by the Samahan ng Industriya at Agrikultura (SINAG), through its president Rosendo So for any one who can furnish vital information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators, including the master mind if any.

While recovering from his lone gun shot wound in the right breast, Maganes is still on-leave as commentator of Radyo Asenso DWPR in Dagupan City but is still writing for his column in the weekly Northern Watch. In the last election, Maganes tried to run for governor under the Union of Political Parties against two other candidates but he later withdrew from the race.

Maganes is still being secured by the Villasis Police as well as the Provincial Public Safety Company in Tayug, Candelario added. Leonardo Micua/PNA-northboundasia.com
