2-day, 10-hour power interruption hits Cagayan Valley,CAR provinces

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela –The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) initiated a two-day, 10-hour rotational brownout each day in six provinces in Cagayan Valley and Cordillera regions Thursday and on Friday as villagers have to endure the heat and temporary discomfort.

Lilibeth Gaydowen, NGCP North Luzon corporate communications and public affairs officer, said they implemented the power outage because they are upgrading transmission lines and facilities in Cagayan, Quirino, Isabela, Ifugao, Apayao and Kalinga.

A 10-hour brownout from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday affected electricity franchise areas of distribution utilities of Kalinga Electric Cooperative, Cagayan Electric Cooperatives I and II, Isabela Electric Cooperative (ISELCO)II and ISELCO I-Reina Mercedes substation.

Gaydowen said the reason was the integration and testing of protection equipment – as part of the Santiago-Gamu-Tuguegarao 230kV transmission line upgrading project serving those electric cooperatives.

On Friday, a 10-hour brownout from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. also led to the shutdown of power in franchise areas of Quirino Electric Cooperative, entire ISELCO I franchise area (except Reina Mercedes Substation) and Ifugao Electric Cooperative-Alfonso Lista Substation.

The reason was the transfer of loads from the 1st 100MVA power transformer to the 2nd 100MVA power transformer – as part of the Santiago Substation expansion project serving these electric cooperatives, Gaydowen added.

She, however, assured that normal operations will immediately resume after work completion.

NGCP customers and the general public were earlier advised to take the necessary preparations and precautions for this scheduled interruption, she added. Villamor Visaya/PNA-northboundasia.com
