Voter registration for barangay, SK polls to resume on Nov. 7 — Comelec

MANILA — The resumption of voter registration for the 2017 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls will start on Nov. 7, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Tuesday.

In his Twitter account, @ChairAndyBau, Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista, posted a photo of Resolution No. 10166, which was approved by the commission en banc on Monday.

The registration period will be from Nov. 7, 2016 to April 29, 2017 including Saturdays and Holidays except on December 24 and 25, 2016 (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and April 13 and 14, 2017 (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday).

Those who are qualified to register for the Barangay polls are Filipino citizens; at least 18 years old on or before Election Day; a resident of the Philippines for at least one year; a resident in the barangay he/she proposes to vote for at least six months before the day of elections; and is not disqualified by law.

Qualified to register as voters for the SK polls are Filipino citizens; at least 15 but not more than 30 years old on the day of elections; residing in the barangay for at least six months on Election Day; and not disqualified by law.

Earlier, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that the poll body will issue an order for the reopening of voter registration after President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law officially moving the October 31 village and youth elections to next year.

The poll body is expected to register a total of 5 million people, 2 million additional voters for the SK election and 3 million individuals for the barangay election.

The conduct of another round of voter registration is required by R.A. 8189 or the Voters’ Registration Act of 1996.
