Mother, son drown in Pangasinan

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan — A mother and her son drowned when they fell one after the other into a swamp near their home in Barangay Ventinilla, Sta. Barbara at about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, police authorities said.

The victims were identified as Juvilyn Calimquim Benitez, 24, a housewife and her son Jovan Calimquim Benitez, 7 years old and a grade 2 pupil at East Central Elementary School in Sta. Barbara, and both residents of Brgy. Ventinilla.

Initial police investigation disclosed that while Jovan, together with his younger brother Jovit, were playing on top of a pile of rocks, particularly at the swamp near their house, he accidentally slipped into a hole and fell into the swamp.

Seeing this, his younger brother Jovit cried out to call the attention of their mother, Juvilyn, who immediately went on top of the rock pile where she also accidentally slipped and also fell into the hole and into the swamp.

Both victims were immediately rescued by concerned citizens and were rushed by the Sta. Barbara Rescue Team to the Region 1 Medical Hospital in Dagupan City, but were pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician. PNA/northboundasia.com
