Palace calls for ‘peaceful activities’ to mark Martial Law anniversary

MANILA — Malacañang on Wednesday called for a peaceful commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

In a statement, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that it will be governance as usual since Sept. 21 is a regular working day.

“This, however, does not mean the significance of the day is lost to the collective memory of the nation,” he said.

He said the Palace understands that some groups would mark the anniversary through public assembly.

“President Rodrigo Duterte encourages various activities to commemorate the occasion as long as they are peaceful and no public inconvenience or destruction of properties may ensue,” Andanar said.

Militant groups are set to stage a rally Wednesday and are expected to march to Mendiola Bridge in Manila to press for justice for the victims of Martial Law.

Aside from these groups, students from various universities and colleges are also expected to walk out of their classes and join the rallies. Cielito Reganit/PNA/northboundasia.com
