MANILA — The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Friday expressed its readiness for the country’s hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit next year.
In a statement, the agency headed by Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo, welcomed President Rodrigo Duterte’s acceptance of the ASEAN chairmanship in 2017.
“We, at the Department of Tourism, are no less than exhilarated by President Rody Duterte’s acceptance of the Philippines’ chairmanship of the ASEAN Summit next year,” the statement read.
The agency said the Filipino people “will be most honored” to host the ASEAN leaders and other heads of state who will be participating in the annual summit.
“We share the President’s optimism and enthusiasm for the country’s hosting of the 2017 Summit, with the theme ‘Partnering for Change, Engaging the World’, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN,” it said.
“We cannot overemphasize that the Philippines played an instrumental role in the founding of the regional bloc. We at DOT, therefore, stand alongside President Duterte, ready and willing to steer ASEAN towards realization of its goals of cooperation and regional stability,” it added.
