Police nab 2 suspects, seize high-powered firearms in Kalinga

MANILA — Police have arrested two suspects and seized several high-powered firearms, ammunition and hand grenade in the province of Kalinga.

Joint teams of Police Regional Office Cordillera (PRO-COR) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) implemented the search warrants issued by Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 53 Judge Reynaldo Alhambra in the respective residence of the suspects in Bulanao, Tabuk City, Kalinga for violation of Republic Act No. 10591, or the “Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition”.

PRO-COR Acting Regional Director Chief Supt. Elmo Francis Sarona on Saturday identified those arrested as Reynold Flores, barangay secretary of Bulanao, Tabuk City, Santos Wacnang, 58, businessman and Midel Basilio Andiso, 37, caretaker of the house of Virgilio Gunnawa.

Sarona noted that Gunnawa, the notorious barangay captain of Bulanao, Tabuk City, Kalinga, who is involved in illegal activities and was numerously a subject of complaints by concerned citizens and also a subject of the operation, was not around during the search.

Seized were three M-16; one Cal. 30; one Cal. 45; one Cal. 38; one cal. 22 rifle (converted rifle); one Cal. 22 air rifle; 270 assorted ammunitions; two rifle grenades; one hand grenade; 10 assorted magazines for M16, Cal. 45 and Cal. 30.

Records show that the suspects were all involved in gun-for-hire activities and illegal gambling in Kalinga.

A case for violation of RA 10591 are now being prepared for filing against them in court. PNA/northboundasia.com
