LAOAG CITY — Hundreds of motorists in the province of Ilocos Norte will simultaneously ride their motorbikes on September 11 in time for the celebration of the 99th birth anniversary of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.
Gary Ronquillo, coordinator of the Motorcycle Philippines Federation of Ilocos Norte Chapter, said around 700 members will join the “Unity ride” including other members from neighboring Ilocos Sur province.
On Sunday morning, the group will convene in front of the Provincial Capitol, Laoag City on their way to Sarrat town, the birthplace of Marcos and then back to Laoag City again via the C5 road.
According to Roquillo, the Unity ride is their way of honoring the former president’s contribution to the country and also a simple way of expressing support to Marcos’ burial at the Libingan.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court extended the halt order on Marcos’ burial for another 20 days or until October 18, 2016.
The SC first issued a 20-day status quo ante order on August 23 to stop President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to the Department of National Defense to prepare for the interment and transport of Marcos remains from Batac City, Ilocos Norte to the Heroes cemetery in Taguig City.
The interment is expected on September 18 but Martial law victims filed a petition for temporary restraining order at the highest tribunal. PNA/northboundasia.com
