Airport authorities arrest man over bomb joke

MANILA — Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) authorities disclosed Wednesday that a man was arrested the previous day for making a bomb joke.

A security guard arrested Marlon E. Soriano, an employee of Air Serve Cargo Express, who shouted, “May bomba diyan! (There is a bomb there!)” during an under-chassis inspection.

The incident occurred at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Cargo Entrance Checkpoint of Cebu Pacific Cargo House, NAIA Terminal 4, according to the Police’s Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP).

The AVSEGROUP said the false bomb threat is a violation of Presidential Decree 1727 (Anti-Bomb Joke Law).

According to authorities, 34-year-old Soriano was undergoing inquest proceedings at the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) prosecutor’s office in Manila at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sr. Supt. Mao Aplasca, AVSEGROUP director, told PNA that anyone who cracks a bomb joke will be arrested, even if the joke does not create a public commotion.

“We will not take it lightly,” he emphasized.

Aplasca appealed to the public to be sensitive to the current situation following the recent bomb blast in Davao.

“We’re doing everything to make our airport secure,” Aplasca said.

He also advised the public to be more vigilant and report if they notice suspicious individuals. Ma. Cristina C. Arayata/PNA/northboundasia.com
