LAOAG CITY —Students who commute everyday may now have a chance to avail of 50 percent fare discount should they ride on few selected Sirib (Knowledge) buses or jeepneys with gas subsidy courtesy of the Ilocos Norte government.
Introducing five new routes beginning September 9, Friday, at least five franchised buses and two jeepneys will fetch student-commuters in specified drop off points with appropriate signages where they could avail of the latest discounted fares when going to school.
Laoag City Administrator Cipriano Hilarion Martinez, in his capacity as consultant of the Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) said Monday the five new routes cover the following: Laoag-Pasuquin north route, Laoag-Batac and Laoag-Suba-Paoay routes for the Sirib school bus project while the jeepney service covers the Laoag-Nueva Era and Laoag-Solsona eastern routes.
According to Martinez, the Sirib school service project is still on an “exploratory” period hence they expect some glitches once they start to operate on Friday.
“Ito ay testing muna. We expect some problems to arise so please let us know,” Martinez said citing the project was initiated by Governor Ma. Imelda Josefa Marcos to cater to students who are rushing to go to school in the morning and go home in the afternoon.
Inspired by the successful implementation of the ‘Night Express’, a subsidized public transport system extending the operation of bus and jeepney operators and drivers in different parts of the province, the Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) is again exploring the expansion of transport service particularly among student-commuters who live in far flung areas.
For students to avail of discounted fares, Martinez said all they have to do is to show their valid identification cards. The test run operation is expected until December 2016 only. PNA/northboundasia.com
