PNP chief tells cops to triple efforts to eradicate drug menace in 6 months

MANILA — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Dir. Gen. Ronald dela Rosa on Friday challenged policemen across the country to work “triple-time” to eradicate the drug menace in six months.

Dela Rosa reminded the police officers of President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign promise to net 1.8 million drug pushers and users, and achieve “zero drug tolerance” within six months.

He however expressed his apprehension that the PNP might not be able to attain these targets in the remaining four months.

The number of surrenderers seems to have peaked at more than 600,000, he said, noting that the figure has not increased for some weeks now.

According to PNP data, as of Sept. 1, the 8,215 operations launched under “Oplan Double Barrel” led to the arrest of 13,215 suspects, and the killing of 915 suspects who resisted arrest.

Under “Oplan Tokhang” meanwhile, policemen visited 582,000 houses, prompting more than 629,000 drug users to yield themselves to authorities. PNA/northboundasia.com
