MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Sunday that it will deploy more personnel to address traffic congestion along the Marcos Highway which traverses the eastern Metro Manila cities of Marikina and Pasig and the city of Antipolo in Rizal.
MMDA Officer in Charge Thomas Orbos said the agency will deputize additional traffic personnel from D.M. Consunji Inc. (DMCI), the private contractor of the Light Rail Transit-2 (LRT-2) extension project.
The said move, according to Orbos, will be coursed through proper coordination with the Inter-Agency Committee on Traffic Management (I-ACT).
The I-ACT is supervised by the Department of Transportation, with members agencies including MMDA, Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Office and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
Aside from the deployment of additional traffic personnel, Orbos said the agency seeks to ease the traffic gridlock along the Marcos Highway through the implementation of a re-routing plan.
Orbos said the following re-routing schemes will be enforced along Marcos Highway:
* Vehicles coming from Cubao/Katipunan to Antipolo shall take A. Bonifacio Avenue (to Marikina City proper), straight to Sumulong Highway to destination and vice versa.
* Vehicles coming from Antipolo to Quezon City shall take Ortigas Avenue extension, left at Kaytikling towards Taytay Palengke, East Bank Service Road, left at Legaspi Bridge, left at C. Raymundo to destination and vice versa.
* Vehicles from Cainta, Rizal to C-5, Quezon City from Felix Avenue, left at Kagihawaan /Magsaysay Streets, right at Amang Rodriguez Avenue, left at Calle Industria to C.P. Garcia (C5), to destination and vice versa.
* Vehicles from Cainta, Rizal via Valley Golf to Cubao, Quezon City from Ortigas Avenue extension, left at Don Celso Tuazon Avenue, take Sumulong Highway to destination and vice versa.
The MMDA will install six closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) to constantly monitor traffic situation in the area.
The agency has also coordinated with concerned local government units and various stakeholders regarding efforts to curb traffic congestion along the major thoroughfare.
Various factors such as the pavement improvements at Barangay Mayamot in Antipolo, ongoing construction of the LRT-2 extension, and vehicles trying to squeeze into the split of the two-lane Barangka Flyover going to Marikina City are among the major causes of traffic jam along the Marcos Highway.
