LAOAG CITY —A total of 135,000 Ilocano youth aged 15 to 30 years old are eager to participate in the upcoming October 2016 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections unless it will again be postponed.
Tessie Diego, Assistant Provincial Election Officer of the Commission on Elections-Ilocos Norte said Comelec is all set for the village and youth council elections.
The Comelec central office has already started printing ballots two months prior to the October 31, 2016 elections.
But several lawmakers including Senator Alan Peter Cayetano are pushing for the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections in October 2018 instead.
Even President Rodrigo Duterte is in favor of postponing the elections to save on cost for the government.
In Ilocos Norte, the Ilocos Norte Youth Office led by its Executive Director James Ventura is hopeful the SK polls would push through.
The SK polls has been postponed thrice over the last three years. It was scheduled for October 2013, but it was moved to February 2015 and then it was moved to April 2015 until it was rescheduled to October 2016 to coincide with the next Barangay elections.
To encourage youth participation in good governance, the INYO formerly known as the Sirib Youth Office was created in 2015 under the administration of Governor Ma. Imelda Josefa Marcos to provide assistance to students, out-of-school youth and job-seeking graduates.
Said office assists in the implementation of educational scholarships, employment assistance, guidance counseling as well as various seminars and workshops, among others. PNA/northboundasia.com
