SANTOL, La Union – Four persons carrying P5.1-million worth of dried marijuana leaves were arrested by police operatives at a checkpoint in Sitio Cabaroan, Barangay Poblacion last Sunday.
Senior Inspector Antonio Marzan Jr., Santol police chief, identified the suspects as Virgilio Galawa, 23; Ryan Palinas, 22, both residents of Barangay Licunga, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur; and Edison Tagaban, 17; Jerry Tacay, 33, of Barangay Puguil here.
Marzan said that concerned citizen gave information to the police about a would be shipment of illegal drugs from Sugpon town to Balaoan, La Union.
“The suspects were on board two motorcycles and were carrying two sacks of unknown content when they were apprehended at the checkpoint.
They failed to present their driver’s license for identification,” Marzan said.
Police manning the checkpoint temporarily held the suspects after they sensed the stench of marijuana from the sacks. The sacks were opened
in the presence of village officials and representatives from the Department of Justice.
Found inside the sacks were 25 tubes and seven bricks of dried marijuana leaves, weighing 41,500 grams with a total worth of P5,187,500.
