President Duterte orders strict implementation of Fisheries Law, provision of ‘modern’ agriculture to attain food sufficiency

MANILA — Determined to stop illegal fishing in Philippine waters, President Rodrigo R. Duterte has ordered strict implementation of the Fisheries Law.

“We shall strictly enforce fisheries laws, particularly on illegal fishing,” the President said in his first State- of-the-Nation Address (SONA) on Monday held at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.

He also ordered to provide “modern” agriculture such as rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads and irrigation, and the establishment of modern post-harvest facilities to minimize production losses.

“Road development projects shall complement with our thrust to provide modern agriculture, infrastructure, by expanding and improving the construction and rehabilitation of roads and irrigation,” he stressed.

The President said a nationwide soil analysis will also be conducted “to determine areas most suitable for rice farming to optimize production with the use of effective soil rehabilitation and fertilization.”

Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Pinol earlier ordered the updating of soil analysis data nationwide to prepare the country for the effects of climate change, especially in agriculture.

Pinol said national soil testing and sampling is very vital in determining which region of the country could grow which crop best based on soil components and fertility.

Also, it would effectively guide the DA and the farmers in determining what nutrients are deficient in the soil in specific areas.

“This is critical in determining what kind of soil nutrients or fertilizer should be applied to specific areas, thus ensuring productivity,” he stressed. Lilybeth Ison/PNA/northboundasia.com
