BATAC CITY, Ilocos Norte — A gathering of the finest artists and performers in Ilocos Norte was held Friday for a spectacular 30-minute theatrical presentation of songs and dances featuring the former First Lady and reelected Representative Imelda Marcos of this province’s second district.
Held at the Teatro Ilocandia built during the time of the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos, young boys and girls entertained the crowd who joined Mrs. Marcos during her 87th birthday celebration on Friday. Her birthday is actually on July 2 but organizers of the event set it earlier in Batac City.
Every year, Ilocanos in this northern part of Luzon make way to celebrate Mrs. Marcos’ birthday with “Imeldific” class and style.
Attended mostly by local officials, close relatives and friends, this year’s birthday celebration showcased the rich Ilocano talents performing in front her.
A feature of the 11-day Romance of Imelda and Ferdinand was shown through her favorite love songs with performers paying tribute to Mrs. Marcos’ great contribution on enriching culture and the arts, Mrs. Marcos expressed gratitude and admiration to all performers.
“Habang ako’y tumatanda, ako’y sumasaya. Ay-ayatenkayo (Mahal ko kayo),” said Mrs. Marcos in her short speech while she vowed to build the first cultural center in Batac City during her third and final term as House Representative of the second district of Ilocos Norte.
“If there is one thing that unite people, bring in prosperity and make them happy, it’s culture and it makes me happy,” said Mrs. Marcos
At present, the foundation of the proposed cultural center here is now being constructed. Once completed, the Batac cultural center is expected to benefit more local talents in Ilocos Norte and its nearby provinces. Leilanie Adriano / PNA / northboundasia.com
